Annual Winter Food Donation: Since the late eighties the club has organised the supply and delivery of canned food to fill Welfare agency food stores. Donating $5,000 or more annually, and with special discount pricing from SPC and support from Ford Motor Company the project has provided around $150,000 worth of food to the needy of Geelong. Senior Citizens Concert: For the last 17 years during Senior Citizens Week the club has put on a free concert at the West Geelong Town Hall. Up to 400 seniors have enjoyed the three hour program with many local artists provide their time free. Food has been supplied to The Salvation Army, Uniting Church "Concern", and The Brotherhood of St. Laurence. Special Disco for Disabled: Each year with the assistance of the owner of a local adult Disco a special night for members of the community with disabilities is held. All of the fun and flashing lights of a regular disco, together with music supplied by the Victorian Police Rock Band make for a fantastic night of music and movement. Often a half dozen wheelchairs rotate on the dance floor. Scholarship Program: Ten Victorian State Schools in the Geelong region participate in the annual Scholarship Program in which a student at each school receives the Kiwanis Encouragement Award. The annual $5,000 project is designed to help student pay for their books, school fees and uniform and encourage them to further their education. Administered through their School bursar the program is supported by permanent funding investments. Jason Thomas Community Service Award: Created to recognise and remember Jason Thomas, the $400 award is presented Annually to a student of Grovedale Secondary College where Jason had attended. Jason tragically died while fighting a bushfire at Linton in Victoria was often found helping Kiwanis events and displayed superior citizenship and community values. The award recognises those values and attributes. His father Bill Thomas is a 30 year Kiwanian and Past President of the club. | |||
